LONGMAN Effective Guide to 'O' Level English

Chapter 6: Specimen Papers

Mid-Year Practice

Paper 1

Section 2

The Principal has decided to create a new leadership post for next year. This  post will be a Liaison Officer between students and teachers, someone who will be able to express the concerns of students but also reflect to students the concerns of the teachers.

This post calls for someone with characteristics such as (not necessarily in order of importance):

  • courtesy and politeness
  • tact
  • self-motivation
  • enthusiasm
  • determination to overcome difficulties

As the Head Student of your Secondary School, you have been asked to write a report and recommendation for your Principal, suggesting four Secondary 3 studnets whom you think might be suitable, including your recommendation as to the most suitable. (Teachers will also be recommending students).

You have thought about it and made these notes on the four most likely Secondary 3 students.

Sally - Most Courteous Student Award (Secondary 2), conscientious, Class Treasurer (Secondary 2)

John - well-spoken, able to think for himself, suggested and started Stamp Club

May - volunteer for flag days, popular - many friends, suggests class outings

Ben - best cadet in obstacle course (Secondary 3 camp), speaks up in class, laughs a lot.

Write a report for the Principal explaining why each of the four students would be suitable and stating who you would choose of the four (and why). Use all the information given but you should also provide additional material about the four in keeping with the information given about them.

Recommendations for the post of Liaison Officer

You have asked me to recommend four Secondary 3 students whom I think may be suitable for the ost of Liaison Officer next year.

I have thought about it and I feel that the following students are the most suitable:

Sally Ong is conscientious, and in addition to being the Class Treasurer last year, she also won the Most Courteous Student Award. Many of her classmates go to her for study tips and she is always eager to help anyone who needs it.

John Chin, who happens to be the student who suggested and started Stamp Club, is well-spoken and able to think for himself. He was also appointed Class Monitor last year.

May Phua often volunteers herself for flag days, and suggests class outings. She is also one of the more popular people in the year, and has many friends from all the levels. She was chosen to be the Band Major in her CCA this year.

Ben Liew was the best cadet in the obstacle course during the Secondary 3 camp this year. While many people may call him the class joker, he is very enthusiastic in his studies and is not afraid to ask questions when he feels the need to. He was also one of the nominees for the Most Courteous Student Award last year.

I personally feel that May Phua would be the most suitable choice. Her popularity among the students will give her an advantage in reflecting to them the teachers' concerns, and in turn, she would find it easier to understand and express the concerns of the students.
