RHYTHMIC TRANSCRIPTION
Rhythmic transcription exercise:
- incomplete score
- complete the rhythm using the given pitch
Rhythmic Notation
![]() |
Semibreve = 4 beats |
![]() |
Minim= 2 beats |
![]() |
Crotchet = 1 beat |
![]() |
Quaver = 0.5 beat |
things to look out for:
- time signature -- adding up the beats incorrectly loses marks
- repetition
- marks allocated (each correct beat gets you one mark)
RHYTHMIC DICTATION SKILLS
- make sure you can identify the time signature
- clear notation is important -- remember to add stems if needed. If the rhythm is dotted, put in the dots
MELODIC TRANSCRIPTION
- need to be able to transcribe melodies (standard notation/graphic score)
~ standard notation consists of crotchets, quavers, etc.
~ graphic scores use symbols
- make sure you know how many times the melody will be replayed
1. Notation
- before starting:
~ make a note of the clef, key signature, and time signature (no. of beats/bar, starting note)
may be easier to notate rhythms before moving on to pitch
- when the music is playing:
~ which direction do the notes move (up/down)?
~ do notes move by steps or large intervals?
~ any repetitions (sequences, repeated phrases, etc.)?
~ any rhythmic patterns?
- frequent errors (melodic dictation):
~ omitting dots on dotted notes
~ drawing note heads but failing to add appropriate rhythmic information (note stems/beams)
~ placing a note on both a line and in a space
2. Graphic Scores
may be asked to:
- complete a timeline using signs or symbols
- draw the melodic 'shape' of the first two phrases that you hear
note:
- what are the lengths of the notes?
you need to show the correct intervals and rhythmic values when drawing the phrase's shape
drawing timelines:
your score should show musical features (crescendos/ostinati, etc)
